Fabric Selection Tips
For Strip-Pieced Watercolor Magic

The most challenging aspect of creating watercolor quilts is selecting the fabric. We generally are attracted and buy what we have always purchased and simply don't "see" fabric we are unaccustomed to buying. Watercolor quilts need active, busy fabric. Following are some tips to help you obtain the most appropriate fabric.

Do the following:

1. Choose fabric that has at least three definitive colors. No monochromatics or two color fabrics.

2. Choose randomly printed fabrics . A randomly printed fabric is one that if you were to cut a two inch strip from selvage to selvage and then cut that strip into two inch squares - no two squares would look the same. Do not use small symmetrical motifs. Do not use static fabric.

3. Choose small, medium and large motifs - variety is the key.

4. Use a variety of motif styles. Combine florals, random geometrics, theme prints, fruits, vegetables, etc.

5. Choose busy, high energy prints. It may not be the style that you would wear, but they are great for watercolor.

6. Be very focused when shopping for fabric values. It is easy to become distracted by the abundance of medium values at the quilt shop. Stand back from the shelves and concentrate on the lights and darks that are always more of a challenge to find. They simply don't attract us like the medium values.
